Avoid the crowds on our Colosseum & Ancient Rome by Night tour, visiting this iconic sight after the tour groups and visitors have gone home.

As day gives way to night we see the Colosseum in a new light, as an ancient structure filled with more shadows than shuffling feet, where the shady history of this spectacular arena can truly be appreciated.

Our tour starts with Trajan’s Column, moving past Piazza Venezia and up Michelangelo’s staircase to reach the Campidoglio – the beautiful piazza outside the Capitoline Museums also designed by Michelangelo, whose curved surface resembles the face of an egg.

We’ll round the museums to find a little-known vantage point overlooking the Roman Forum (closed at this hour). As the light fades, your expert, English-speaking guide will talk you through the heart of Rome’s historic center – pointing out temples, arches and the sanctuary of Ancient Rome’s famous Vestal Virgins.

On your way down the hill, your guide will point out Caesar’s and Augustus’ Forums among other ruins. Then it’s on to the highlight of our tour – the Roman Colosseum.

At this time of night the Colosseum is virtually empty, so your experience as your guide leads you around, explaining the history and characters that make it so fascinating, will be a rare one. We’ll wander the arena floor from where you’ll understand the magnitude of Ancient Rome’s foremost amphitheatre.

A sure highlight of our tour comes when we venture into the underground, treading the tunnels that gladiators and beasts walked before being hoisted onto the arena floor via trap doors. Few visitors can visit the Colosseum underground, and fewer still see it at night, making this peaceful, spooky visit even more special.

Our Colosseum by Night Tour travels in small, intimate groups of no more than 25 people, preserving the peace of the evening and ensuring that your guide will have time to answer all your questions.

Our tour ends when the night is only starting in Rome. Head to the nearby Monti area for dinner or take some time to wander around and photograph the Colosseum – more peaceful, beautiful and atmospheric at this time than ever.                                                                                                                     

On this tour, some of the venues or parts of the venue may be subject to last-minute, unpredictable closures. When this occurs, we are happy to offer customers an extended tour in keeping with the advertised total length of the tour.

Due to Colosseum security regulations, a PASSPORT OR VALID ID DOCUMENT IS MANDATORY to join this tour. It is your responsibility to ensure you have a valid document with you on tour. Passengers who fail to provide a valid proof of identity will be denied entry.

• Please meet at the departure point 15 minutes before the start of your chosen tour time.

Approximately 2.5 hours.

Departure Point:

• The tour commences at Trajan 's Column located on Via dei Fori Imperiali next to Piazza Venezia.
• Your tour guide will be waiting here wearing a blue City Wonders polo shirt or jacket for easy recognition.
• Please ensure you arrive at the meeting point at least 15 minutes before your tour is due to begin.

Suitable Clothing:

It is recommended that you wear layered clothing and comfortable walking shoes.

Accessibility:

The tour includes a reasonable amount of walking, hill and stair-climbing. For this reason the tour is unsuitable for wheelchair users or those with mobility difficulties.

Restrictions:

• This tour is unsuitable for pushchairs or baby carriages.
• Children under 6 are not allowed to participate on this trip.

Italy’s tourist sites are among the most popular in the world and though skip-the-line access and careful planning does well to limit crowd exposure, some locations may be unavoidably busy.

This tour involves a fair amount of walking; comfortable shoes are recommended.
