11 February , this guidance applies to England

If you’re fully vaccinated, you will no longer need to take a COVID-19 test either before or after you arrive in the UK. You still need to complete a passenger locator form.

If you are not fully vaccinated you will need to take a pre-departure test. After you arrive, you will need to take a PCR test on or before day 2, but you will only need to quarantine if it’s positive. You still need to complete a passenger locator form.

 

Latest Update 7th January 2022

 

From 4am on 7 January, if you qualify as fully vaccinated or are under 18, you do not need to take a PCR test before you travel to England or self-isolate when you arrive.

From 4am on 9 January, if you qualify as fully vaccinated, you can take either a rapid lateral flow or PCR test within 2 days of arriving in England. If you have a positive result on the rapid lateral flow test, you must take a PCR test.

Changes to pre-departure testing from 4am, Tuesday 7 December 2021

From 4am, Tuesday 7 December all people aged 12 years and over must take a PCR or LFD COVID-19 test before they travel to England from abroad.

You must take the test in the 2 days before your service to England departs. If your journey to England is a multi-leg journey, you must take the test in the 2 days before the start of the first leg.

This will apply whether you qualify as fully vaccinated or not.

Travelling internationally from England

There are no longer any restrictions on leaving England to travel internationally, however to protect public health in the UK and the vaccine rollout, you should not travel to countries on the red list. 

If you travel to ANY country or territory, you should look at the rules in place for your destination AND the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCO)

You should do this even if you are returning to a place, you have visited before.

What you must do when you arrive in England from abroad depends on where you have been in the 10 days before you arrive.

Red list countries and territories

If you have been in a country or territory on the red list in the last 10 days you will only be allowed to enter the UK if you are a British or Irish National, or you have residence rights in the UK.

You must follow these rules even if you have been vaccinated.

Before travel to England

Before you travel to England you must:

• take a COVID-19 test – you must take the test in the 3 days before you travel to England
• book a quarantine hotel package, including 2 COVID-19 tests
• complete a passenger locator form

You must do this even if you are fully vaccinated.

On arrival in England

On arrival in England, you must:

• Quarantine in a managed hotel, and complete 2 COVID-19 tests

What you must do if you arrive in England after 4am 30 November 2021

 

Before travel to England- Fully Vaccinated

Before you travel to England you must:

• Book and pay for a day 2 COVID -19 PCR test – to be taken before the end of day 2 in England.
• Complete a Passenger Locater Form

On arrival in England

• You must take a COVID -19 PCR test before day 2 after you arrive.
• You must self isolate in your home or the place you are staying until you receive your test result.
• Children aged 4 and under do not need to take this test.

 

Before travel to England- NOT Fully Vaccinated

• take a COVID-19 test – to be taken in the 3 days before you travel to England
• book and pay for day 2 and day 8 COVID-19 PCR tests – to be taken after arrival in England
• complete a passenger locator form – to be completed in the 48 hours before you arrive in England

On Arrival in England

• quarantine at home or in the place you are staying for 10 full days
• take your COVID-19 PCR tests – you must book these tests before you travel
• You must take the first test on or before day 2 and the second test on or after day 8. The day you arrive is day 0.
• If you are in England for less than 10 days, you need to quarantine for the time you are here. You need to book day 2 and day 8 PCR tests. You only need to take the tests if you are still in England on those days.

• Take a COVID -19 test
• Book and pay for 2 COVID -19 tests to be taken on day 2 and day 8 – to be taken after arrival in England.
• Complete a Passenger Locater Form

On arrival in England, you must:

• quarantine at home or in the place you are staying for 10 days.
• Take a COVID -19 test on or before day 2 and on or after day 8.
• Children aged 4 and under do not need to take the day 2 or day 8 test.
• You may be able to end quarantine early if you pay for a private COVID -19 test through the Test to Release Scheme.

If you have been in a country or territory on the red list

If you have also been in or through a country or territory on the red list in the 10 days before you arrive in England, you must follow the red list rules.

Countries moving to the red list.

If conditions change in a country or territory, it can be moved from the amber list to the red list. If there is a sudden change in conditions, a country or territory may be moved between lists without warning.

Green list countries and territories

What you must do if you have been in an Green country or territory in the 10 days before you arrive in England.

You must follow these rules even if you have been vaccinated.

Before travel to England

Before you travel to England you must:

• Take a COVID-19 test
• Book and pay for a day 2 COVID -19 test – to be taken after arrival in England.
• Complete a Passenger Locater Form

On arrival in England

• You must take a COVID -19 test on or before day 2 after you arrive.
• Children aged 4 and under do not need to take this test.
• You do not need to quarantine unless the test result is positive.
• You must quarantine if NHS Test & Trace informs you that you travelled to England with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

If you have been in a country or territory on the red or amber list

If you have also been in or through a country or territory on the red list in the 10 days before you arrive in England, you must follow the red list rules.

If you have also been in or through a country or territory on the amber list in the 10 days before you arrive in England, and have not visited a country on the red list, you must follow the amber list rules.

As a result of the latest national lockdown measures announced on 04 January 2021 by the Prime Minister the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office currently advises British nationals against all but essential international travel. They advise that you can only travel internationally – or within the UK – where you first have a legally permitted reason to leave home. In addition, you should consider the public health advice in the country you are visiting. If you do need to travel overseas (and are legally permitted to do so, for example, for work), even if you are returning to a place you’ve visited before, you should look at the rules in place at your destination and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) travel advice. UK residents currently abroad do not need to return home immediately. However, you should check with your airline or travel operator on arrangements for returning. Foreign nationals are subject to the ‘Stay at Home’ regulations. You should not travel abroad unless it is permitted. This means you must not go on holiday. If you are visiting the UK, you may return home. You should check whether there are any restrictions in place at your destination.
