American Airlines’ Flagship Suite to debut on Chicago-Heathrow route from 5 June

American Airlines has announced the initial routes for its newly delivered Boeing 787-9 aircraft, which will feature the carrier’s new Flagship Suite business class product.

The aircraft will operate flights between Chicago and London Heathrow from 6 June, followed by Philadelphia-Heathrow from 6 August, Philadelphia-Zurich from 3 September, and Dallas-Brisbane from 26 October.

The new Boeing 787-9 will make its inaugural commercial flight between Chicago and Los Angeles on 5 June, before returning to Chicago O’Hare and then taking off for London Heathrow later that day. Tickets for these inaugural services go on sale today.

The carrier announced plans to launch the Flagship Suite on new 787-9 and A321XLR aircraft (as well as 20 retrofitted 777-300ERs) in 2022, alongside a new premium economy seat.

Singapore-based budget airline Jetstar Asia will close down at the end of July

Singapore-based budget airline Jetstar Asia will close down at the end of July, with affected passengers to be offered full refunds.

The low-cost airline has struggled with rising supplier costs, high airport fees and increased competition in the region. More than 500 employees will be laid off.

The shutdown of Jetstar Asia will not impact the operations of Australia-based Jetstar Airways, nor those of Jetstar Japan, according to its part-owner Qantas.

The budget carrier will offer a progressively reduced service over the next seven weeks and travellers will be notified if their flight is affected. Passengers with tickets to fly after the 31 July closure will be contacted by the airline.

Some affected customers could be moved onto alternative flights operated by the Qantas Group. Jetstar Asia is advising people who booked through a travel agent or separate airline to contact those providers directly.

Sixteen routes across Asia will be impacted by the shutdown, including flights from Singapore to destinations in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

The closure of Qantas' low-cost arm will provide Australia's national airline with A$500m ($325.9m; £241.4m) to invest towards renewing its fleet of aircraft. It will also redeploy 13 planes for routes across Australia and New Zealand.

"We have seen some of Jetstar Asia's supplier costs increase by up to 200%, which has materially changed its cost base," said Qantas Group Chief Executive Vanessa Hudson in a statement.

The discount airline, which has operated flights for over 20 years, is set to make a A$35m loss this financial year.

Fifty one per cent of the company is owned by Singapore firm Westbrook Investments, with the remainder held by Qantas.

Virgin Atlantic to introduce free wifi for all

Virgin Atlantic made a series of customer experience announcements at an event held at Frameless in London last night.
The headline news is the introduction of free streaming-quality wifi to all cabins for Flying Club members.

The carrier will begin by installing Starlink wifi technology onto its A350 aircraft at the start of 2026, with the whole fleet expected to be online by the end of 2027.
As previously demonstrated on carriers like Qatar Airways, Starlink’s network of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites is a game changer in terms of offering fast, reliable connectivity in the air. Passengers will be able to stream, game and stay connected seamlessly on multiple devices.

CEO Shai Weiss said: “To full fill the brief that we’ve set ourselves, which is to offer free, basically unlimited, streaming-quality connectivity on a plane, right now there’s only one solution. It is Starlink. We were the first airline to launch wifi fleet-wide across the Atlantic and now we will be the first fleet to complete this transformation”.

UK airports begin relaxing 100ml liquids limit at security

Travellers departing Birmingham and Edinburgh airports can now carry liquids in containers up to two litres in size through security.

Edinburgh – which completed installation of its new security scanners in May – became the first airport in Scotland to relax the 100ml rule last week.

The airport confirmed that “there is no limit on the amount of liquids that can be taken through as long as they are no larger than two litres”.

Similarly Birmingham Airport now advises that “liquids, pastes and gels in containers no more than two litres can be carried in hand luggage”.
